Family Social Distancing Scavenger Hunt Summer 2020

Thank you for your interest in the Family Social Distancing Scavenger Hunt Summer 2020. This post is to try and spell out all the rules. If you have any questions, please leave a comment or send me at email at scavengerhunt@makingcentsofit.com.

Platform
Goosechase LogoOur Family Social Distancing Scavenger Hunt will be hosted on Goosechase. This is a free app that you can download to your phone. Once you register, you will receive the game code to enter our challenge.

How the Teams Will Work (Playing as an Individual)
Due to the nature of Goosechase, each team will connect as an individual (the parent). This allows for more participation because we are limited to five teams or forty individuals.

If we have more than forty families sign up to participate a second game will be created with identical challenges. The "master" scoreboard would then be added to this page and updated every other day.

When
The scavenger hunt will run from July 15, 2020 until August 19, 2020.

Most clues will be available the entire time however there will be a few "bonus" clues that will be time sensitive. I am based on the East Coast in Philadelphia, but am aware that as a virtual challenge, I may have participants from other timezones. Therefore, any bonus challenge will be set at times that work for all time zones: 12pm-9pm EST (9am-6pm PST).

Registration
To organize registrations, I will be using a Google Form. When you complete the form, you will receive the game code and password, along with basic instructions for the app.

Cost
This is a fundraiser for American Cancer Society. To participate, the requested donation is a minimum of $10 per family. Your donations can be made directly on my athlete's page for American Cancer Society. This will also allow you to receive a receipt for tax deduction purposes. If you are able to donate more, please do. Your money is going to a great cause.

If you would prefer to make your donation through a Facebook fundraiser, there is a connected fundraiser link as well.

The donation is not mandatory and you can still participate without donating. Anyone that does make a donation will receive 1000 points to start the challenge.

Prizes
I'm hoping to have more prizes donated so this list will grow.

Winner Selection
First prize will go to the team that earns the most points on the scoreboard.

To be fair to all other players since some may join our scavenger hunt later in the month or other issues that may come up, all other prizes will be distributed through a random draw. I will "draw" winners via a live Google Meet call using Wheel of Names. You will be able to join the call live to celebrate the end of our challenge but it will also be recorded. Your team will receive one entry for every 100 points earned.

Swag
I have designed a scavenger hunt shirt that you can purchase if you want something fun to remember the competition with. All proceeds from these shirts will also go to the American Cancer Society. Orders will be taken through July 31st. They will then take approximately two weeks to print before I can ship them out. If you order a shirt, expect to receive it by the end of August.

Fine Print (sort of)
Many of the clues will require you to take pictures. I understand privacy concerns. You do not need to include your children in the pictures. I tried to put hints of how to hide identities for specific clues but you can be as creative as you need to feel comfortable. I have included some samples below of myself for the ideas.

Goosechase will not allow you to attach previously taken images, and they must be taken directly through the app. If you have a reason to need to edit an image before sharing it (example if you need to blur or crop something out for privacy) the work-around is to take a picture of the picture. You will still get credit for this in our game because I want everyone to stay at their comfort levels.

This sample image below shows the original image on the left. It was just placed on a Powerpoint slide with a blue box over the fake school's name in the image on the right which was a picture taken of the computer screen. Fancy editing is not required to increase privacy.
